richard wilson's turning the place over stops turning
Sad news - Richard Wilson's Turning the Place Over will rotate no more.
After an amazing three-and-a-half years (amazing how time flies that is) what has become something of a landmark in Moorfields has come to a halt.
It has turned during daylight hours, with the occasional break for maintenance, since May 2007 and has been seen by an estimated three and a half million people.
The artwork, co-commissioned by the Culture Company and Liverpool Biennial and cutting a section from the frontage of the old Yates's bar and rotating it on a hydraulic arm, was only ever meant as a temporary artwork conceived as a trailblazer for Liverpool's year as Capital of Culture.
But it proved enduringly popular with visitors and local people alike.
It was apparently a star of YouTube even before it was launched and the more than 100 videos of Turning the Place Over on the site have received hundreds of thousands of viewings with one attracting more than half a million views alone.
But all good things come to an end alas.
it's creator, Richard Wilson, says: "It has been a privilege to have placed in Liverpool such an acclaimed artwork that in part doffed a cap to this city's engineering heritage".

Pity this could not continue. I worked as a guide on behind the scenes tours and everyone really enjoyed it.
