October 2010 Archives

Well, I did it, I completed my final Everyman Unbound Anthology performance last night - and I have a full 'loyalty card' of stamps to prove it.
I would like to apologise again though to Stuart Richman who was performing Robert Farquhar's A Word Doesn't Exist and had to put up with my death rattle cough all the way through.

The Arts Council has revealed the cuts its passing on to regularly funded bodies this morning.
In 2011/12 it's passing on 6.9% in cuts which is less than was expected.
Of course, the picture becomes slightly clearer when you read on and discover that there will be a 14.9% 'real-terms' cut to the money available for the regular funding of organisations by 2014/15.

I feel almost bereft as tonight is my final Everyman Unbound Anthology tour - I'll have the full set of stamps on my card.
However, I am quite glad I've saved and indoor show until last as the weather out there is grim!
Last night was lovely and clear which was good as I found myself sitting on a small square of plastic sheeting in Abercromby Square watching Kevin Harvey's paranoid fantasist the Cardboard Guitarman.

Another great (and thankfully dry, if cold) night walking the streets around the Everyman on the latest Anthology tour.
I chose the letter last night which was Esther Wilson's play Not Welcome, performed brilliantly by Lucy Hind and with a cacophony of voices in our ears thanks to the giant headphones we all wear.

Many congratulations to Merseyside Dance Initiative for its deserved win at last night's MOBO awards here in Liverpool.
The dance organisation scooped the BeMOBO Award for outstanding achievement in community engagement and grassroots work.
Ironic, as more than one person has pointed out, that it came on the day of the funding cuts when the Arts Council - which currently funds MDI to the tune of £94,000 - lost nearly 30% of its cash.

Pete Postlethwaite, dark drama and quirky comedy are on the programme for the 2010 Liverpool Film Night apparently.
Nine films have been selected for this year's event which takes place on November 11.

We're 24 hours away from finding out exactly how much money is set to be slashed from each government department.
Of course with some departments losing less, as we've seen in the news, it means others are likely to lose more and I fear that may be the case for the DCMS.
It's very, very difficult to argue the case for the arts when defence, education and the like are all being hammered, but we shouldn't be unfairly penalised either because culture is seen as the dilettante of the Westminster world.
Art and culture is a huge employer and generator of income in the economy. And it's what makes life, when everything else seems gloomy, worth living.
We'll be reporting on the cuts in Thursday's Echo so I'll do my best to keep you abreast of what it means for the former European Capital of Culture.

It was my fourth Anthology tour at the Everyman last night and as the dark clouds filled the sky I decided I'd go on Unquiet.
This is writer Lizzie Nunnery's piece which takes its audience into the depths of St James's Cemetery below Liverpool Cathedral.

Interestingly, in the last two nights I've been to review two shows where at the heart of the storyline is a passionate love story.
And I've been pondering the importance of on-stage chemistry which is, in many ways, more difficult to pull off than on-screen chemistry.
Do you have it? And how do you impart it to an audience many many feet away?

Great news......he enjoyed his visit to Liverpool with Swan Lake so much earler this year that choreographer Matthew Bourne is on his way back and this time he's bringing the enchanting tale of Cinderella.
Tickets for the production, at the Empire from April 26-30, have just gone on sale this week.
