liverpool biennial and john moores painting prize part two
So now we know who has won this year's John Moores Painting Prize - Burnley-born artist Keith Coventry.
He was announced at a press conference yesterday lunchtime but we were sworn to secrecy ("that applies to social networking sites too" we were told) until 6.45 last night when the 'official' announcement was made.
I wasn't at the teatime event so I don't know whether Keith feined surprise or not!
But the lads (I call them lads, they're all about my age but then I still think of myself - albeit misguidedly - as young) who were runners up were certainly surprised the winner had been announced when we all converged on the Walker Art Gallery at lunchtime.
To be honest, when it came it was all a bit of an anti-climax because it was done in such a low key way.
Anyway, although I've browsed my catalogue, I didn't get the chance to have a proper look around the exhibition so that's one definite for the weekend.
Smily German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans was there too. His installation at the Walker doesn't technically open until tomorrow, but it's up now and apparently the gallery has already had a visit from a couple of foreign curators who are very excited by the exhibition and have told Walker chiefs they are keen to work with him.
It was such a manic day for so many reasons yesterday that I didn't get the chance to see a huge amount, but I very much enjoyed - if that is the right word - the two works inside the Scandinavian Hotel./Europleasure palace at the top of Duke Street, and poked my head into the old Rapid store for a look at what was going on in there.
I also bobbed in to the Contemporary Urban Centre in Greenland Street yesterday teatime and I can recommend the City States exhibition, particularly the Media Landscape: Zone East in the basement.
The Biennial opens to the public tomorrow and I'd urge everyone to get out there and see the inventiveness at first hand.
