return from RLPO in spain to rainy reality in liverpool
The rain in Spain? Seems to be mainly in Liverpool frankly - there was an audible groan on our flight from Madrid last night when the pilot announced it was 16C and raining.
A handful of us returned from San Sebastian (via the Spanish capital) yesterday, while the rest of the orchestra travelled by bus to Santander for another concert last night.
It was a bit of a wrench to leave frankly, and ironic that the pilot on our second flight announced we were crossing the Spanish coast - above Santander, where 30,000ft below they would have been starting a late-afternoon rehearsal.
The concert on Wednesday night seemed to go pretty well, although the programme of Chopin (piano concerto no 1) and Mahler's 4th needed perhaps something a touch more explosive to accompany them.
There was no sign of Mick Hucknall in the audience this time.
But then we were sitting in the cafe at San Sebastian airport yesterday morning when who should fetch up but the Huck! He was on our flight to Madrid, although he and his partner sat in front of the tatty bit of curtain separating "business class" from the rest of us on the plane, so obviously - as various Facebook friends pointed out - money isn't too tight to mention.
Anyway, back at work and it was a shame I missed the Pamela Anderson press conference yesterday and her revelation that she's looking forward to chips with vinegar. A girl after my own heart, and hopefully I'll catch up with her closer to Christmas and her panto stint itself.
Next up the Phil have a six hour coach journey to La Coruna today to prepare for their marathon performance of Wagner's Parsifal next week.
And of course tonight is the hen night - I hear all the male musicians are going to be locking themselves in their rooms or vanishing into the night as there have been threats of de-baggings if they are discovered in the vicinity of the pink cowboy-hat wearing hens. Watch out La Coruna!
Although I have had to come home, trumpet player Brendan Ball is still blogging from the tour and you can read all about it on http://brendanball.com/
