dare to wear exhibition at the walker almost left artist shattered
Diana Dias-Leão's beautiful glass frock creations go on show at the Walker from today.
But they almost ended up as nothing more than shards of broken glass she told me.
The artist exhibited the dresses in a gallery in the north east last year, but the owner ended up going bust and the next thing she knew she and other artists had been locked out of the venue by bailiffs.
Apparently all her wonderful artwork was carted off to an auction house where she managed to rescue it - the day before it was due to go up for sale.
But the delicate works had been damaged in the sudden move, and it's taken her six months to repair them to go on display again.
She tells me: "To get them to the Walker I first wrapped them in cling film, then bubble wrap, then put a cover over the top and transported them lying flat."
When I met her the other day she was putting the final touches to the work in their display cases so they mannequins she's created as clothes horses for the dresses aren't showing too much "builder's cleavage".
Go and have a look. They're on show in the ground floor gallery until June.
