whistle down the wind at the liverpool empire
Bill Kenwright's new touring version of Whistle Down the Wind (the musical) opened at the Empire this week and I popped along to review it last night.
I'd meant to re-watch the classic Hayley Mills/Alan Bates film before I went, but I was pleased that I hadn't in the end because it may have confused the issue.
Because although the basic storyline - children find fugitive in their barn and mistake him for the son of God - is the same, much has been added to the periphery since 1961.
Not least 30 musical numbers and a change of location to the Deep South of America circa 1959 where conservatism clashes with the forces of change, where segregation is still rife and where religious fervour suffuses every day life.
In general I was impressed by the new production, as you'll see from my review in today's Echo, and if G4's Jonathan Ansell isn't the most frightening killer on the run I've ever seen (try not to make comparisons with the dark, brooding Alan Bates for heaven's sake) it makes it more believable that the children wouldn't be too frightened of him to take him in.
He's also got a terrific tenor range and his first real attempt at acting is creditable.
But I must mention 11-year-old Josh Simpson from Liverpool who plays Poor Baby in tandem with another young actor.
He's bright as a button, and it's no surprise considering that he's from Liverpool that he's got great comic timing.
One thing I will say about the show, and it's not really anything the cast can influence, is that it doesn't really have many "highs".
And I didn't have chance to say this in my review, but the climax to the whole two plus hours turns out to be a bit of a dramatic ANTI-climax. I'd like to see more passion from the kids protecting their "jesus".
But that is just a minor issue or two. Go along and see something that's a wee a bit different
