phill jupitus and les dennis in hairspray

By Catherine Jones on Jan 15, 10 01:03 PM

So Phill Jupitus will be stepping into Edna Turnblad's shoes (and fat suit) when Hairspray arrives in Liverpool in August.
It was likely to be either the Buzzcocks team captain, currently doing duty in the West End production of Hairspray, or Brian Conley who is also deputising for Michael Ball at some venues on tour.
Still, it's also great news that our own Les Dennis is set to appear alongside all three as Edna's loveable but crazy hubby Wilbur.
He told me at Christmas that he was in talks with Michael Ball about a possible role in the show, and now it's official. It will also be Les's third visit to the Empire this year as he's also in High School Musical 2 which is in town from February 1 for a week.

Hello Catherine, I don't know whether you attended Messiah recently at the Phil, but it was ruined by a ridiculous amount of coughing from the audience, right through some of the most beautiful solos and recitatives. My friend and I were so distressed and annoyed that I came home and sent an e.mail letter to the Echo, although it was not published. Last night at the first of the Mahler concerts, the coughing wasn't nearly so bad, but still at inappropriate parts of the music. It seems to us in the circle that every cough is magnified by the accoustic. What does it sound like from where you sit and are you ever tempted to mention it in an article? Hardly anyone even tries to muffle or suppress a cough. I always think it must drive the orchestra crazy, but perhaps they can't hear it as much as the audience.

Jill - I feel your frustration! Very often I sit there in the Phil and want, tourettes-like, to shout "for God's sake, stop coughing" at people.
If someone has a bad cough they should think very seriously about coming to a classical music concert. Or a play for that matter.
There are also the habitual coughers who seem to associate the end of a movement with an opportunity to fill the silence with a good hack.
If I were Vasily I'd want to leap off the stage and poke them with my baton.....
And yes, I have felt tempted and very occasionally I do mention it if it's particularly bad!
