jonathan pryce in the caretaker at the everyman
Have you booked your tickets to see The Caretaker yet?
If not, get on the phone straight away because whether Harold Pinter is your thing or not, this is one of the best shows I've seen on stage in Liverpool this year.
Of course that is mostly down to a bravura performance by Everyman prodigal son Jonathan Pryce as the tramp Davies - a performance ably abetted by co-stars Tom Brooke and Peter McDonald, and by some fine discreet direction from Chris Morahan.
The last time I saw The Caretaker was in London 20 years ago when it starred Donald Pleasance, Colin Firth and Peter 'Bread' Howitt and the assistant director was one Gemma Bodinetz, now of course artistic director at the Everyman.
It was press night last night and there were a few familiar faces in the audience.
Singing stars Freda Payne (Band of Gold) and Deniece Williams (Let's Hear it for the Boy which I have on 45 record somewhere!) bobbed along ahead of their appearance with David Gest at the Phil on Saturday.
And actors Nick le Provost and Neil Pearson - the latter whom I last saw at a fund-raising curry night a few years ago where I recall we talked US road trips - were also in attendance.
I can't promise recognisable faces every night, although I'm reliably informed The Temptations are planning to see the play this evening.
But with the mesmerising performances on stage, you won't be looking around the theatre anyway.
