vasily petrenko signs a new three year contract with the RLPO
Well, I know Michael Shields is dominating today's headlines, but there's also some good news from Hope Street.
I watched at lunchtime today as Vasily Petrenko signed a new contract with the RLPO which commits him to Liverpool until 2015.
We'd been alerted yesterday afternoon to today's (mysterious) press conference, and presumed it wasn't to tell us he'd decided he'd had enough and was off!
My money was on a one or two year extension to his 2012 leaving date, so three years was an unexpected bonus.
He looked pretty happy and relaxed about it and apparently the orchestra were "thrilled" when they found out earlier today.
I suspect there will be much rejoicing and a party atmosphere at the opening concert tomorrow evening which is sold out to the point where they are overflowing on the choir seats too.

It's the best news, Catherine, we are so lucky to have him. His little speech before the concert yesterday was so touching and a big wave of love went out to him in the thunderous applause that followed it. I really hope he gets everything he wants for the Phil orchestra. After nine years he won't be forgotten, but how tremendous if we could build the Vasily Petrenko Concert Hall and Conservatoire before he moves on!
Yes I agree Jill, it's the best news Liverpool could have had. I have to admit I was pretty surprised he committed himself to 2015.
When we were asked to attend for the press conference (and to watch Vas signing his new contract - I did jokingly ask him if he was sure before he put pen to paper!) we all assumed it was good news, but my money was on him extending his contract by no more than a year or two, so THREE years was a shock.
I'd love to think we could get somewhere on new improved facilities in the next six years, but in the end, whatever people wish and hope for, I'm afraid it does come down to funding.
And the reality is, there isn't a lot to go round at the moment. Maybe post 2012.......
