payback at the unity theatre

By Catherine Jones on Sep 22, 09 09:50 AM

Cabbie John Evans' play Payback opens at the Unity tonight at the start of a four-night run.
John is one of a number of Liverpool hackney drivers who spend their downtime on the ranks by writing plays, books, poetry and composing music.
They certainly are a talented lot.

Payback is set in 1982 and is the story of five dockworkers struggling with the world which is changing around them.
The "containerisation" of the Port of Liverpool has a devastating effect on the thousands of dockers who formerly plied their trade on the city's waterfront.
With redundancy and payouts imminent, the five chat about their plans in the surroundings of Harry's Cafe, their usual haunt.
But there are some out there plotting to fill their own pockets by making life more miserable for the others.
Payback was first performed at the Casa a few years ago, and now the Unity has stepped in to offer John and Me Productions a wider platform for the work.

I went along to the Unity to watch "Payback". A fantastic show with a great storyline. Each character was played outstanding by those who played them.
Harry (Glyn Edwards) was superb with some great expressions and a diverse of emotions throughout.
Angry Ed (Bob Lawson) Outstanding performance with some great one liners which brought the house down.
Apron (Mark Harris) performance as Apron was second to none, amazing talent and the crowd felt for him.........
Betty (Maggie Lynch)the only female member of the cast was outstanding as Harry's wife, again another superb performance.
Yank (Will Cain) was superbly played to perfection with an emotional ride throughout for the crowd.
Lucky (Dave Williamson) great character which we all could identify someone with and the calm one of the group. great performance throughout.
Single Bert (Davy Edge) Mr cool of all the group of Dockers was also outstanding with him playing the part as Betty's lover.
Can't forget the Gasman (Chris Darwin) who only had a small part in the play, but what a part, a great scene and one that had the audience in stitches of laughter.

If you have not seen this play, it is back on again at the Theatre Royal in November. Well worth going to. All I can say is a fantastic cast. it's funny, emotional and with a twist, it's a must. Strong language throughout, but in a tasteful way. 10/10 in my own opinion and one not to be missed. Well written and well performed by a strong cast.
