our day out and kes
It's good to see so many Liverpool youngsters taking part in professional stage productions at the moment.
Firstly I went to see Willy Russell's re-worked musical version of Our Day Out at the Royal Court last week.
Then last night I went to review Kes (see today's Echo) which also features city schoolchildren in the cast.
In both shows, the youngsters - most of whom have very little previous acting experience - are excellent.
Our Day Out is guaranteed to plaster a smile across your face and several songs in your head, while although Kes isn't exactly laugh a minute, as I say in my review, the young actors really do acquit themselves well.
I know director Nikolai Foster was concerned about whether he should attempt to change their Liverpool accents or not, but he obviously decided they would be just too glaring against the Yorkshire tones of the rest of the cast and the youngsters have risen to the challenge to produce accents from across the Pennines.
Incidently, it was nice to see some of Willy Russell's writer friends at the Royal Court press night - including Alan Bleasdale, Tim Firth and new poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy no less.
