alison steadman talks about her Liverpool childhood

By Catherine Jones on Sep 16, 09 02:59 PM

Today the Echo has published my article about Alison Steadman and how she was helped on her road to stardom by the good folk of Liverpool.
There are probably a lot of people out there who aren't even aware that the star of Life is Sweet, Pride and Prejudice and Gavin and Stacey is even Liverpudlian - but she is, being born in Oxford Road hospital and growing up within shouting distance of Anfield.

What was so nice to hear from her was about all the genuine, lovely Liverpool people who went out of their way to help her when, as a drama-mad teenager she decided to throw in her job working for the Probation Service and try to get into drama college.
She still recalls all their names, still speaks fondly of the help they gave, and she still has all the books (like Shakespeare's complete works) her office colleagues clubbed together to buy her to go off to London and try and make it big.
And of course, she didn't let them down.
I also asked her if she'd consider performing on the stage in Liverpool again, and she said if it was the right play, then she certainly would.
So come on Liverpool theatres, there's the gauntlet thrown down! Maybe it won't be as long as we think until she follows fellow Everyman alumni like Pete Postlethwaite and Jonathan Pryce.

I saw Alison play Ella in "Soft or a Girl" on 1971, at the Everyman Theatre. I have never forgotten her performance - I can't remember a lot about the play but to this day I can still picture Alison sat at a dressing table doing her hair. She was SO funny! In the interval we met up for a drink with Drew Dawson who I believe was Stage Manager there at the Everyman - my boyfriend Mike had been ASM at the Neptune Theatre, so they were friends. I heard Alison talking to a cast member about the characters in the play. She said something like, "There really are people just like that you know!"
I have taken an interest in the work of Alison ever since. She makes me smile.
Lovely to read this page.
