julian lennon at the beatles story

By Catherine Jones on Jun 17, 09 12:06 PM

Julian Lennon made a rare return visit to the city of his birth yesterday with mum Cynthia to launch the new White Feather: Spirit of Lennon exhibition at the Beatles Story.
The display, at the new Pier Head museum space, includes Lennon memorabilia from the period he was married to "Cyn" in the 1960s and other family mementoes.

It was sad to learn from mother and son that Julian had had to buy most of the items as he was left next to nothing of his father's when he was shot dead in New York.
There was a lot of hullabaloo surrounding the visit - I've been through less clipboard security to cover a visit by the Queen frankly - but when you managed to unpeel the layers of PR people (at least one unnecessarily officious frankly) and get to the Lennons themselves, they were incredibly nice and obliging.
Julian, in particular, was affable and very eloquent in describing the reasons for the exhibition and the difficulties he'd faced coming to terms with what was essentially an abandonment by his dad.
Cynthia spent several minutes alone before the press conference, just standing on the waterfront and staring out across the Mersey towards the Wirral side.
It's amazing to think she's 70 this summer,(she doesn't look it) and Lennon would have been 69 in October.
"It's good to get back to where you belong" she said, paraphrasing the Beatles hit which was number one 40 years ago.
