pier head party

By Catherine Jones on Jan 12, 09 02:06 PM

Did you go to the Pier Head on Saturday night?
Phil Redmond estimates there were about 57,000 people spread along the Liverpool waterfront and goodness knows how many watching the fireworks from Wirral.
He maintained beforehand that it wasn't simply about a firework display.
No, there were some beautiful atmospheric lanterns floating in the new Leeds-Liverpool canal link as well!
And not forgetting the unedifying site of muggins here, 20ft high on the big screen singing All Together Now.....

Now I really feel like the year is over.
So what next for Liverpool? What next indeed - as we're fond of saying (because it's true), culture didn't start on January 1 2008 and it didn't end with Capital of Culture.
To live in Liverpool is to be surrounded, swamped, wrapped in a warm woolly jumper of culture all year round.
This city performs in its sleep, it can't help it, throwing out great numbers of writers, artists, poets, painters, comedians, dancers, actors, singers and musicians.
We don't need a title to tell us that, although we needed it to remind others.
What do we do now? It's business as usual. It's Carry On Culture, and with heads held high.
