a big weekend for culture

Posted by Catherine Jones on September 2, 2008 9:36 AM |

Here we are on the brink of another big weekend in Capital of Culture.
I hope people are anticipating the arrival of La Princesse, the La Machine mystery creature, as much as we are here in the office.
Added to that, there is the arrival of DaDaFest.
And on Monday, the Superlambananas are back - if only for a swansong - in the city centre.

I went to the Lambanana hospital yesterday where they are being repaired and repainted ahead of next Tuesday's auction.
Some are looking a little sorry for themselves, while others appear almost pristine. But the team of artists and helpers are wielding their paintbrushes and - where needed - attaching new bits and pieces, so they should look as good as new by Monday when they go on display on St George's Plateau.
Of course, people then need to be discouraged from climbing on them again!
Jamie Carragher was there with his young family, checking out the lambies ahead of the auction. His young son James would like to take Rafa Baa-nitez home, but as Carra said "If we were beaten, I might give it a kick."
Probably best not then! If he does put in a sucessful bid for a statue, all the kids' little friends will be clamouring to go round to the Carraghers' and play on it!!
Anyway, back to La Machine. There's certainly an air of anticipation in this office - but then we know what's going to happen and when.
The organisers are still asking for it to be kept under wraps. I just hope all this secrecy doesn't have the opposite effect to the one they hope for and that people do actually know something big is happening this weekend.
Come out and see it - if you do, it's something you'll never forget.
And finally, spare a few hours and go and see some of the interesting exhibitions and events taking place in this year's DaDaFest. A Foundation in Greenland Street is a good bet for a thought-provoking afternoon out.
DaDaFest runs from September 4-7.
