doddy and his Liverpool laughter-makers

Posted by Catherine Jones on April 2, 2008 9:25 AM |

Another late finish to the working day - but no surprise really when Doddy is involved.
The fact we made it out of St George's Hall before midnight was unusual considering the length of his usual shows.
But this of course was something a bit different - Doddy talking about some of the OTHER great Liverpool laughtermakers, people in his words he "loves and reveres".
They included Arthur Askey, Tommy Handley, Robb Wilton and Ted Ray, who all came to life once more in grainy black and white film footage on a screen above Doddy's head.

The first hour and 40 minutes of the evening was given over to traditional Doddy show songs and gag after gag after gag.
There was gentle ribbing of the front row, but nothing nasty, not in the land of Dodd. As he said ironically about modern telly comedians; "They mean well. I blame the parents."
There was a proliferation of tickling sticks around the small concert room, and not simply the 8ft version on stage, leaning incongruously on a carved nymph.
The second half, which started some time shortly before 10pm, and after a slice of 08 sponge cake, was given over to Doddy's homage to Liverpool's big four - Askey, Wilton, Ray and Handley.
There were also images and names of dozens of other Liverpool comedians, and recorded messages to the Squire of Knotty Ash from Les Dennis and Tom O'Connor.
Dickie Mint made an appearance and the evening ended with a singalong to Happiness and the presentation of a crystal bowl filled with jelly babies.
And he's doing it all again tonight.
There's stamina for you.
Oh, and a tip to those of you sitting in the gallery. Grab more than one cushion if you can - those wooden benches get a bit hard after a while and you're in for a long night...
