The inaugural Liverpool Art Prize was announced yesterday and I went along to see who the judges favoured in this Capital of Culture year.
All the finalists are exhibiting at the Contemporary Urban Centre in Greenland Street - the old Buddleia building from the ECHO's Stop the Rot list which is looking superb following a £16m regeneration.
The Liverpool Art Prize has taken over two of the six gallery spaces.
The overall winner was audio and visual artist Imogen Stidworthy for her piece based on the idea of communication.
Meanwhile the £500 "people's choice" award went to the Singh Twins.
More than 440 people who went to see the exhibition in its first week voted, which must be very pleasing for Ian and Minako Jackson whose artinliverpool.com organisation was behind the competition.
They've said: “We are really thrilled and proud. The exhibition looks fantastic thanks to the artists and curator, Tomas Harold and the wonderful venue.
"It's been a great success so far and we offer our congratulations to the winners and sincere thanks to all the artists.
"We look forward to many years of organising this major annual art event here in Liverpool and hope it's something all Merseyside-based artists will aspire to be a part of.”
I also hope more people now flock to see the exhibition, which runs until May 7, and to see the new arts centre which is great.
