liverpool cityscape

More than 25,000 people have now passed throught the Walker Art Gallery since Ben Johnson set up his Liverpool Cityscape studio barely a month ago.
The artist admitted to me last night he had been "overwhelmed" by the interest in his artwork.
But despite the fact it must be odd to be trying to create art in a goldfish bowl, he appears to be thriving on the attention.
I had a brief chat with him at an event organised by investment company Rensberg Shepherds which will be a main sponsor of the exhibition showing the final canvas.

When he first started at the Walker I had asked Ben how he'd cope with the attention and he told me the rather charming story of how he had a studio next to Sir Peter Blake's in London, and some days Sir Peter had about 40 people knocking around and always urged them to have a peek through the window at what Ben was up to.
Well, according to his lovely wife Sheila, who is assisting him on the Cityscape, some days they have had 1,200 people through the doors in Liverpool!
I think it's brilliant, and the second admission to me - that it looks like they will run over schedule - should actually be seen as good news for the people of Liverpool as it will give them more time to come and see the work being created.
It's a little piece of history being made before our very eyes.
