new culture secretary

By Catherine Jones on Jan 25, 08 09:07 AM

So we've got a Liverpudlian in charge at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
And an Evertonian to boot.
Warren Bradley will be particularly pleased then!
But what does Andy Burnham's appointment really mean for Liverpool, European Capital of Culture?
Not the £20m we need to pay for it I bet.

Still, let's see how passionate Andy is to make Liverpool's year in the spotlight a success.
He's been a cog in the DCMS wheel for a long time, previously being a research assistant to Tessa Jowell and then a special adviser to Chris Smith.
Remember Blair's babes? Jacqui Smith was one (and I remember Jacqui when I started my career in newspapers and she was then still only a member of Redditch Borough Council).
Now we appear to be seeing the phenomenon of Brown's boys.
Fellow Manc MP James Purnell, who was in charge of culture until yesterday, is on his way up and now Leigh MP Burnham is following the same trajectory.
We'll wait and see though whether career path and being a Scouser and a passionate Blue are a happy marriage for Liverpool or not.
