theatrical riches

By Catherine Jones on Oct 15, 07 08:28 AM

I've returned from a week away to find there are more things going on at the theatre than you can shake the proverbial stick at.
Among the usual spam and press releases, my inbox is crowded with information about plays, opera and the like.
Leaving aside the usual suspects (Empire, Playhouse et al) for a moment, Pauline Daniels is appearing as Willy Russell's runaway housewife Shirley Valentine.
The popular play is on at the delightful little Liverpool Academy of Arts Actors' Studio in Seel Street from Thursday until November 15 and tickets are £10 on 709 9034.
Meanwhile next month, a new production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest opens at the Little Theatre in Birkenhead.

The show, on from November 15-17, is directed by Alan Veste and produced by Philip Bimpson and tickets are £8 on 647 7831 or 07960 344679.
Back at the homestead, the Empire plays host to the Welsh National Opera from tomorrow with its new production The Sacrifice, as well as Cinderella and Il Trovatore.
This week also sees the opening of Rough Crossings at the Playhouse, while over at Lipa the students are performing Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well from Thursday to Saturday.
Add in The Song of an Emigrant at the Everyman on October 16-17 followed by Roger McGough and Brian Patten's 40 Love at the Hope Street venue on October 19-20.
Plus comedians Ardal O'Hanlon and Ross Noble are both in the city on Sunday.
And on Friday, the Turner Prize opens at the Tate.
More of that later in the week.
Not a bad time to be in Liverpool then.....
