Macca, Ringo and 2008

Posted by Catherine Jones on September 29, 2007 9:57 AM |

So, they finally managed to secure the two living Beatles for Liverpool's culture year.
Within minutes of the Echo coming out on Thursday revealing Macca WOULD play in 2008, emails started coming in to me.
And if the number of requests I've had for ticket details is anything to go by, the Liverpool Sound concert is likely to be oversubscribed by about 10:1 at least.
I even had an agent on the phone to me yesterday asking how he could get his client (a rising young Merseyside singer - and no, it's NOT Ray Quinn) on the bill.....

I'm interested to know what people out there think about the 2008 programme.
Personally, a lot of what I feel is relief that we've now got some specific information coming out. And to be fair, there was so much announced this week that we couldn't really even do it justice in a 16-page supplement which was in yesterday's Echo and Daily Post too.
We also keep being told it's not the end of the announcements. For example, the Everyman and Playhouse are yet to reveal their 2008 programme in full.
Word on the street is that Pete Postlethwaite is very keen to come here as King Lear, but nothing is signed on the dotted line yet. So watch this space.
Meanwhile down at the Liverpool Echo Arena they have a lot being organised but can't say a whole lot about it until the promoters of the different shows allow them to.
It's mightily frustrating all round.
Personally, I can't wait to see 100 5ft 10in Superlambananas scattered from Walton to Woolton, or what Artichoke - the people behind the Sultan's Elephant which brought London to a standstill - have got planned for Liverpool.
Then there's Ringo standing on top of St George's Hall on January 11 - how Abbey Road of him! Will he have a drum kit up there? Will the rain hold off? And then the next evening the RLPO will be stacked up on vertical scaffolding in the Arena with Petrenko bobbing up and down on a scissor lift. In my mind's eye I see them being a bit like that opening or closing bit in the Muppets - but the organisers sounded a bit aghast when I suggested that!!
I'm also personally looking forward to the Viennese Balls at St George's Hall in April. What with the success of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in recent years, I hope the hall is packed with twirling, whirling dancers.
The good news is, that last time I spoke to the Culture Company about it, the events were going to be ticketed (to control numbers) and FREE. That's an evening in the grand St George's Hall, dancing to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and costing to price of a couple of drinks and a taxi home.
They have even said they don't want people to feel pressurised into dressing up, so everyone feels they can take part. But then, how often do you get the chance to deck yourself out in a posh frock (well, the ladies anyway) and feel a bit like a fairytale princess.
Add in the Tate, Empire, Royal Court, Unity, Lipa, Philharmonic, museums, the cathedrals, the sporting events, the annual festivals and it's not a bad year to be in Liverpool.....
With Phil Redmond still driving forward his Cultural Clearing and Open Culture plans, I can't see any reason why everyone who wants to get involved (and it's inevitable some people won't be that interested) shouldn't.
Now they just need to deliver what they're promising.
