festival row

Posted by Catherine Jones on September 6, 2007 9:54 AM |

The row over the Mathew Street Festival rumbles on, with calls for resignations and demands for QCs to carry out a probe into this year's events.
I sat through the protracted ding dong at the Town Hall last night.
And came out feeling exhausted and depressed.

Depressed at the whole sorry mess we (Liverpool) seem to have got ourselves into.
And depressed at the level of debate in the council chamber.
I suppose its not much different to what goes on in local authorities around the country - and in Parliament itself.
But if I had been a 'real' member of the public there last night I would have been appalled.
Appalled at the name calling, the pointless political point scoring, the petulant jeering (and that was inside the chamber, not the protest going on in Castle Street), and most of all, at the standard of debate that was on show.
This is a proud city.
We have a proud history (well, mostly leaving aside slavery and Militant).
So let's have a bit of pride and show we also have the ability to be strong, eloquent, lucid and adult.
