slavery museum

A sneak preview of the new International Slavery Museum today with a media pack from London.
It's got to be good that it's getting national and, no doubt, international coverage.
Then again, we'll have to wait and see what they actually write.

Being a 'pack' and being led round by the museum boss Dr Richard Benjamin and various curators, it was a bit difficult to really take in what I was seeing.
Another, longer, more considered visit is needed.
They were all very proud of the traditional African 'Ibo' compound that has been recreated inside the third floor museum, complete with wooden carved panels and doors from Nigeria, and artwork from a Liverpool artist and a London-based Nigerian artist.
Maybe it was because it was a bit new, but that was actually the LEAST satisfying part of what I saw. The carving was lovely but the rest looked, well, too fake.
I wanted to tap the walls because they were so obviously something like a fibreglass or similar material. Quite disappointing.
But generally it looks like an extremely interesting and yes, thought-provoking, museum.
One of the most immediately arresting exhibits is the home-made Klu Klux Klan outfit, donated by an American who had been given it a long time ago and said he didn't know WHAT to do with it - he was worried about even throwing it in the bin.
Of course in its most simple form it's really only a bit of white cloth and stitching, but it's immediately chilling - more so when you realise it came not from some southern former 'slave' state, but from New York State.
Some people may say it shouldn't be on show. But if anything is going to stop you in your tracks and make you think, that is it.

I was speaking to someone last week who heard a rumour that the Liverpool Mural Project were planning on doing a mural of Frederick Douglas here in Liverpool. Frederick Douglas who wrote the book An American Slave acctually visited Liverpool before starting a tour of Scotland and Ireland. I wounder if this is true because if so it would be wonderful to see Liverpool honouring such a famous abolisionist as Frederick Douglas?
