bill drummond

I went to the latest Late at Tate last night.
Unfortunately, I managed the Tate bit but not the late which was a shame.
And the closest I got to seeing star turn Bill Drummond was standing next to him in the foyer.

Part of that was my fault - I did a bunk before he started his talk.
But that was because the former Bunnymen manager was still AWOL a good 40 minutes after he was supposed to start the evening.
Perhaps AWOL is too strong a term - he was, after all, in the building at least as early as 5.30pm.
But he certainly wasn't in the packed auditorium at 6pm to tell us his views about Capital of Culture.
Or at 6.10.
Or at 6.20.
With nothing much happening, we were all finally asked to leave for a few minutes as Drummond needed to set up some canvasses, with a promise we'd get under way at 6.30.
I admit it, I hate lateness. It's not rock 'n' roll, it's not endearing, it's just a bit rude.
So at 6.40 - with still no sign of anything starting - I gave up and went home for a nice glass of wine and a spot of dinner.
An apology to the kind people at the Tate who invited me along, and slight regret that I missed hearing that Drummond often talks to the city of Liverpool in his head.
According to reports in the Daily Post today, he added: "When I heard it was to be Capital of Culture I said to it: 'You're going to blow it, aren't you'.
"I just hope it succeeds, as if it does we will win nothing but the respect of all those who doubted.
"That is something that only Liverpool could do."
Just what we've all been telling Liverpool in our heads - and out loud - for a long time.
