chavasse park

Remember Chavasse Park?
Apart from the fact it was an easy cut through from the centre of town to the Albert Dock, it was a nice green spot to sit out on with a paper or an icecream from the van at the bottom of the slope.
It was also one of the venues for the Mathew Street Festival outdoor stages.

All that disappeared with the giant mud pit of the 'Paradise' development, although we were promised a new Chavasse park would rise from the building site.
I did have my concerns about two or three years ago when I went to a Grosvenor update meeting and saw the plans for the area that the green space would be squeezed into a tiny triangle with a much-reduced view to the waterfront.
Alas, having travelled past on the bus for the last few weeks and watched the progress of the polystyrene being inserted between the underground car park and the 'new park' area, I now worry those concerns are about to become a reality.
The stairwells and lift shafts of new, bulky buildings show how they will encroach on much of the old park's vistas.
I asked a friend what they thought and they said: "there's not much of it, is there?".
In fact, can you class a bit of grass-covered polystyrene a park at all?
