brimstone (no treacle)

By Catherine Jones on Mar 5, 07 08:15 AM

I HAD a lesson in Old Testament smite at the Phil last night.

It wasn't that I was turned into a pillar of salt or stoned or whatever, but it came courtesy of the sheer power of the human voice.
The ladies and gents of the Liverpool Welsh Choral and Wigan Choral Society had turned up en masse to sing Mendelssohn's Elijah - a lesson in what happens when you start breaking commandments.
There must have been more than 100 singers on the Phil's stage, not counting Sir Willard White who is no slouch when it comes to powerful singing.
When they launched into the opening 'Help, Lord!', if they couldn't quite hear them in Galilee then it would have certainly rattled a few windows over in Greasby.
It was a very accomplished performance from two groups of what are, after all, part-time singers.
I'm now looking forward to seeing how they can top this for Capital of Culture.
