burning question

By Catherine Jones on Jan 17, 07 08:19 AM

800 candles were lit in St George's Hall last night to create an illuminated labyrinth with one candle for each year of Liverpool's life.
You can see the stunning result in the Liverpool papers today.

That's likely to be your only chance though, because as one disgruntled member of the public pointed out to us, they couldn't get a ticket for love nor money.
The event, Sacred Move and Reflections, was among those outlined in the press pack of cultural offerings for 2007.
It was mentioned in a Culture Company release highlighting the New Year's Eve fireworks, and although they subsequently didn't give it a big fanfare, you would expect that members of the public would be able to go and see it in their own public building - as they did the candle maze at Liverpool Cathedral two years ago.
Alas, you'd be wrong.
It turned out the event was 'invitation only'. But who exactly WAS invited?
As a last minute concession, the Culture Company gave me a phone number people could ring if they REALLY wanted to go and they wanted to see if there were any returned tickets.
But when one woman called the number she was told in no uncertain terms the event wasn't open to the general public and she couldn't attend.
There has been a big fanfare about 2007 being for 'the people of Liverpool'.
On last night's evidence, the people of Liverpool may be entitled to be a little sceptical about that claim.
Head honchos at culture central would be well advised to make sure this type of closed shop event doesn't happen again.
